Appledore

This fascinating old port, with an historic past and a long tradition of boat building and fishing, lies where the rivers Taw and Torridge join. Its small colour-washed Georgian and Victorian cottages lining the narrow streets give a special atmosphere and charm. The central part of this delightful seafaring old town, of which little has changed in the last hundred years, has been declared a Conservation area.

Most of the small streets lead down to the Quay, which provides delightful views across the estuary to Instow, and at which the fishing boats tie up.

Out and About

A ferry service operates across the water to Instow. Sailing, fishing, water-skiing and wind surfing take place in the bay or estuary; and trips may be made to Lundy Island from Bideford or Ilfracombe.

There is good bathing and surfing on the two mile long sandy beach at Westward Ho! (about 1.5 miles away), and there is an indoor pool at nearby Northam.

Bideford, providing a wider range of shops and a large supermarket is three miles away.

Bird watching and long walks along the cliffs west of Westward Ho!, and along Northam burrows to the East, are enjoyed by many visitors to the area.

There are public Tennis courts at Westward Ho! , and notable golf courses at Westward Ho! (Royal North Devon) and Saunton, at which visitors are welcomed.

The Tarka Trail is for walking and cycling and extends for 180 miles through North and Mid Devon. The Bideford to Barnstaple section follows the River Taw, and the Bideford to Torrington follows the River Torridge, both passing through spectactular coastal and countryside scenery along a disused and reclaimed railway line. Bicycles and safety helmets can be hired at Tarka centres in Instow and Bideford.

Appledore makes an excellent centre from which to explore North Devon and Exmoor. Further information is available in the cottage, and the North Devon Tourist Board information centre in Bideford is also a good source of local knowledge.
